The Indian Certificate of Secondary Education Examination has been designed to provide an examination in a course of general education, in accordance with the recommendations of the Education Policy 1986, through the medium of English. The Indian Certificate of Secondary Education Examination will ensure a general education and all candidates are required to enter for six subjects and Socially Useful Productive Work.

Students are to attempt the exam for a total of seven subjects, 4 compulsory subjects from Group A; 2 optional from Group B and 1 optional subject from Group C. The final score for any subject is a combination of both external and internal marks. External marks will be rewarded by the ICSE board and internal marks will be rewarded by the school or institutional authorities. Some subjects are under the 80% + 20% while some falls under the 50% +50 % marking scheme.

Candidates who have been awarded Pass Certificates in the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education Examination with passes in five subjects including English are eligible to be admitted for preparation in courses of study leading to the Indian School Certificate Examination.
